Campaigns

From the moment our students start on the course, we put PR into context and give students the chance to experience PR as it exists in the 'real world'.

We have guest speakers, run mentor schemes and host conferences - all to give our students hands on experience and so they can apply the skills they have been developing. Our students are extremely proactive and throughout their three years with us, they build their knowledge, network and work experience.

If you are a PR professional and would like to be involved with any of our initiatives or would like to get to know our students better, get in touch.

#WMGeneration

In January and again in May, we mobilised a group of students via our student PR agency, Eastside PR, to support the BCU Enterprise team in backing Birmingham's bid to entice Channel 4 to the region, with West Midlands Mayor Andy Street the lynchpin of the whole campaign.

Within two weeks, the BCU Eastside PR team had galvanised support from across the Midlands, creating content and pushing the message across social media platforms, achieving millions of impressions. Then in May, there was a further 24 hour blitz, where local creative companies and contacts were targeted again to 'back the bid' on their own social channels. And you know what? The bid is currently being considered...

#PermissionToSmile

How can we turn a 'keep yourself to yourself' society into a friendly, positive and encouraging one? It’s absolutely needed. There’s no pleasure in ‘sour insularity’. And many suffer isolation, discouragement and lack as a result.

This social change campaign is all about instigating and inspiring change in the way we relate to those around us in our communities.

In autumn 2017, Kelly O'Hanlon from BCU Media first spoke to Martin Graham, Director of Permission To Smile, about what he was setting out to achieve and in November, second year PR students were given the live brief to work on. Simply, how do we spread the message of the smile around Birmingham? Some 30 students developed their ideas in groups as a production project and three weeks later, they pitched their campaigns to their lecturer and to Martin.

From this, three third year PR / new media students took up the challenge as part of their final year project, to actually develop and deliver this campaign with Martin. Two worked on the media relations and social media side, whilst the other supported on web development, and all three, plus several other BCU Media volunteers, were on hand to drive the city centre launch on 12th May, with a range of second year student ideas brought to life.

"Special thanks to BCU's School of Media, particularly to three third year students, Maddy McCrann-Smith, Claudia Miguel and Ellie Boon, who have given superb support in shaping the campaign (including building websites, managing social networking and creating strategy). We couldn't have done this without them!"
